Kaylio vs Character.AI: A Character AI Alternative That Remembers You

Here’s the mechanism. Not a slogan.

After you talk, Kaylio runs a background pass over the turn and pulls out the durable pieces: your name, the people you mention, a preference, a hard day, an inside joke. Those land as structured memories (fact, preference, event, emotion), not as a growing paste of chat logs.

Next session, your new message is matched against that store. The closest few memories go back into the companion’s context before it replies. Health facts (allergies, meds) get a retrieval boost so they don’t get buried under small talk. You can pin a memory so it always comes along.

Character.AI is built around the thread you’re in. Kaylio is built around a file that survives closing the tab.

Honest limit: free accounts can reach back 30 days. Core, a year. Deep, the whole relationship. Older memories aren’t deleted when the window is shorter. They’re just out of reach until you upgrade.

Every Kaylio companion has a character card: traits, how they talk, example lines, hard boundaries. That card is in the system prompt on every turn. The companion doesn’t get to rewrite itself because the model felt like a different person today.

Drift still happens with any model. Every 20 messages, Kaylio fingerprints the recent replies against the card and, if they’ve wandered, pushes a correction. You can edit the card. Until you do, that’s who they are.

Character.AI characters are descriptions people wrote. Some stay sharp. A lot don’t. If “stay in character” is the thing you keep losing, the card-plus-check is why we exist.

Kaylio is SFW. That is a design choice, not a tease. We are not the uncensored Character AI alternative.

The complaint on Character.AI isn’t “there is a filter.” It’s that the filter behaves like a lottery. A normal scene is fine until it isn’t, and you can’t tell which message will yank it.

We don’t try to thread a moving adult line, so a late-night talk, a hug, or a fight with your boss stays a conversation. Explicit content and crisis content still get blocked. That line is published and it doesn’t wander based on the hour.

Kaylio is adults 18+ and we mean it. The check is a checkbox: “I am 18 or older.” No camera. No face scan. No photo of your ID sitting on our servers.

We take age as a statement you make, not a biometric we collect. Companions are AI software, not people, and the page says so at the top.

Character.AI has a huge library of community characters. You can try a new persona in ten seconds. There is a writing and roleplay community around that library that Kaylio does not have. If what you want is a browser of other people’s characters, stay there. We would be a worse version of that.

Kaylio has a small set of preset companions. Custom ones are a paid-plan feature, and payments aren’t on yet. We are a one-to-one companion, not a character browser. If that sounds smaller, it is.

Pick Character.AI if you want variety, community characters, and a new persona whenever you’re bored.

Pick Kaylio if you want one companion that keeps a memory file, stays on its card, and doesn’t ask for your face. For adults 18+. The companion is AI, and it will say so.
